The Sandys Middle School along with the two Primary Schools in the area, held a special ceremony to honor Carifta Track and Field star Zakiyyah Showers and Carifta Swimming sensation Jesse Washington.
Following a drumline display on the field of the Somerset Primary a special assembly at the Sandys Middle School was held, where the school Principle Dr. Timothy Jackson proclaimed the day Zakiyyah Showers and Jesse Washington day.
During the year Showers won the Middle School Cross Country Over 13 Girls race, while in the Carifta Games that took place at the National Sport Center, Showers finished 5th in the Girls 3000 Meter Run clocking a time of 10:52.13 in the Under 17 Girls 1500m race Showers finished sixth in a time of 5:09.28.
During the Carifta Swimming Championships in The Bahamas, Washington won a total of 7 Medals in the 11-12 Boys Age Group, Washington won Gold in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle, Washington won a Silver Medal in the 50m Backstroke and a Bronze Medal in the 400m Freestyle.
