BOA President Simons Named to IOC Education Commission

IslandStats.com
The Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) announced that BOA President, Judy Simons, has been re-appointed a member of the Olympic Education Commission by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach effective May 13th, 2019. Simons was previously named to the Education Commission in June 2015.

The Olympic Education Commission advises the IOC President and Executive Board on the promotion of Olympic values-based education, and provides strategic direction on IOC programmes and activities related to the education of youth through sport.

Specifically, commissioners advise on the development and implementation of an Olympic values education strategy, advocate for physical education as part of school curricula, promote sport as a valuable part of youth development, and focus on the development of resources for educators on Olympic values and life skills. The Commission also works to integrate values education into IOC and partner programmes, including the Athlete Career Development Programme.

Simons said, “I am honored to have been selected to serve again on the IOC Education Commission, and I look forward to contributing my energy and ideas to the Commission’s important work to promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect through education. As a former athlete, and through my work with the BOA and IOC for many years, I know that sport is a valuable tool for character development. Participation in a sport provides a conduit into which a young person can focus his or her energy, and enjoy the rewards and recognition that come with hard work. Competing internationally provides young people with the chance to forge friendships with people from different places, a broader perspective, and an appreciation for other cultures. I am excited about working with my fellow Commission members to help make those opportunities available to more young people around the world through the IOC.”
