The CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathlon came to an end in Tobago, with the Bermuda Team’s ending second overall in the points table with 43 points in a field that saw 12 countries competing, Bermuda finished behind a very strong Guadalupe team with 100 points, with Trinidad and Trinidad & Tobago finished 3rd with 23 points.
Considering the Bermuda team had no participants in the 16-19 Triathlon and no males in the 16-19 Aquathlon, it was a very strong performance and bodes very well for the future. There were.
It was another strong day with Bermuda winning a Gold and a Bronze Medal.
There was a met office warning last night of high sea swells - 10 foot waves - which meant that the organizers had to make a decision at 5 am as to whether any of the swim elements of the events could go ahead.
The conditions did not look as bad as expected this morning and the organizers decided to go ahead with a shortened 500m swim for the 16-19 Sprint Triathlon. However, there were strong rip currents which caused most of the athlete’s problems on both the entry and the exit, and it was considered too dangerous to have the 11-12 and 13-15 Age Groups Swim.
As a result their events were reduced to just runs, 1.25K for the 11-12 Age Group and 3.75K for the 13-15 Age Group.
