The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) informs that the cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago de Chile, Chile, submitted their Letters of Intent on time and form to be candidates to host the XIX Pan American Games in 2023.

The President of the Pan American Sports Organization, Dr. Julio César Maglione, received the Letter of Intent from the head of the Argentine Olympic Committee, Dr. Gerardo Werthein, informing on the nomination and interest to earn the site. Likewise, the head of PASO received the documents signed by the President of the Olympic Committee of Chile, Mr. Neven Ilic Álvarez, expressing their interest to host the Pan American Games, the most important quadrennial multi-sports event worldwide, after the Olympic Games. Both nominations fulfill all requirements, accepting the commitment to respect the PASO Constitution, the Pan American Games Regulations and the conditions foreseen in the Guide for Candidate Cities.

Argentina seeks to host the Pan American Games again at the city that saw their birth, Buenos Aires, in 1951, 66 years ago. Last January 31st was the deadline for the cities interested on the site to submit their Letters of Intent signed by the members of PASO, in this case, the corresponding National Olympic Committees, as well as letters by government representatives.

Santiago de Chile is nominated for the second time in a row and is fully confident it fulfills all necessary conditions to organize the main sports feast of the Americas, offering to be excellent hosts.

Next April 30th, both cities should complete their applications by making a deposit to PASO and providing the information indicated in the Games Regulations and in the Guide for Candidate Cities. Immediately after, on May the 1st, the PASO President will inform all Members on the Letters of Intent received. In case any city withdraws its candidature, the President should inform all Members of PASO accordingly. The site of the Pan American Games shall be awarded regardless of the group the country of the Candidate City belongs to. It shall be decided by secret ballot and a majority of votes (50% plus one) cast by the Members of PASO present at the General Assembly, with the right to vote, will be needed to earn the site.

PASO informs that the site will be awarded during its LV Ordinary General Assembly, to be held later this year in Lima, Peru, site of the next XVIII Pan American Games.
