Sully Centurions Cricket Club 212/6 Ynysygerwn 100/7

Terryn Fray and his Sully Centurions Cricket Club 1st XI teammates kicked off the new campaign with a winning draw at Ynysygerwn.

In spite of the terrible weather, which washed out all but 2 of the Swalec Premier League matches, the game went ahead as a reduced over contest. Having being asked to bat, Centurions lost new boy Fray for just one, with the score on 12. However, this brought Adam Shantry and Ryan Sylvester together and they proceeded to make hay, putting on 135 for the second wicket.

Ryan Sylvester was finally out for a marvelous 93, which included four 6’s and nine 4’s. Shantry soon followed, bowled for 43, with the score on 150. Daniel Rowe added 26 not out and skipper Lloyd Smith chipped in with 34 as the pair enjoyed an entertaining half century 4th wicket stand and the innings closed on a formidable 212/4 after the allotted 30 overs.

After tea, with the weather getting colder and gloomier, the accurate spin of Jamie Sylvester and Tom Evison frustrated the home batsmen and the wickets began to tumble as the required run rate started to creep up to double figures.

Evison returned figures of 3 for 21 and Jamie Sylvester posted 1 for 15 to virtually kill the game off at the halfway stage. Shantry chipped in with two wickets for just 4 runs and Richard Ready, returning to Sully after a season away, picked up 1 for 7. However, in spite of skipper Lloyd Smith switching things around and using a total of 9 bowlers in an attempt to get the last three wickets, Ynysygerwn held on for the draw, with Grant scoring 25 and Maggs was on 31 not out being the pick of the home side's batsmen. Nevertheless, with 21 points in the bag, this was a great start to the season for Centurions.
