CCC Junior Bronze Medalist Under Investigation

IslandStats.com
2009 Junior Caribbean Cycling Championship Bronze Medalist Darren Matthews from Barbados is currently being investigated by their respective National Anti-Doping Committees following the results of drug tests conducted after the Tour of Guyana in November.

Matthews finished the 2009 version of the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championship which took place in Bermuda behind Roberto Torres from Puerto Rico and Rudy Ashton from Trinidad in the Junior Race.

Following the five Stage Tour of Guyana, the top ten finishers were requested to undergo mandatory drug testing by officials of the World Anti-Doping Agency/Guyana Olympic Association prior to the start of the prize distribution ceremony.

Another rider also under investigation Carlos Ospina, who ‘won’ the event, refused to take the random drug test which led to his immediate disqualification and total removal of his name from the event’s leader- board. Matthews, however, according to a source in Barbados, did take the test which revealed “adverse analytical findings”.

Chairman of the Tobago International Cycling Classic, Jeffrey Charles, following these revelations yesterday, he indicated that these matters must be firstly handled by the sport’s governing bodies such as UCI (International Cycling Union) and the Pan American Cycling Confederation (COP ACI).
