The Bermuda Bicycle Association will hold its annual Mountain Biking Championships this Sunday, March 15th, at the Southlands property in Warwick.
After 8 races dating back to November 30th 2014, this race will more than likely finally attract print and television news media attention.
The event, which has been held at Ferry Reach for many years, will be contested at the new location thanks to the Parks Department who supported the request by the BBA.
While the competition course uses only a small fraction of the property, spectators and participants will be treated to the many natural and man-made features of this former estate.
The competition, which is sponsored by Winners Edge, gets underway at 9:00am with Junior Male, Junior Female and Open Female races.
The Junior Male race will be one of the more closely watch as the current off-road season has highlighted the abilities of several young riders.
Dylan Hill, Kaden Hopkins, Robin Horsfield and Matthew Oliveira should provide the fireworks to the race. All four of them have had strong racing seasons and come into the event eager for the national title.
The morning will also see non-championship races in two categories (12 & Under and 13-16) where developing riders get a taste of the course and an opportunity to watch the top riders in action.
The final race of the morning will be the Open Male category. With racing lasting 75 minutes on a course of constant ups and downs and several very technical sections, the advantage will be for the rider who is willing to take some risks while bringing a high level of conditioning.
Che’quan Richardson and Deshi Smith will represent the lower age range of the category while posing as serious contenders to the title while seasoned riders like Mark Hatherley bring greater experience on dealing with the duration of the event.
