FINAL
As predicted, Jesse Washington came to finals tonight, determined to win a medal in the 200m freestyle for 16 year old boys. But no one realized just how determined he was until the race began.
Looking very focused with smooth swimming during warm up prior to the start of the race, Washington produced the first gold medal Bermuda has ever won at the Canadian Age Group Championships.
Continuing his pioneer streak from two years ago when he won Bermuda’s first ever medals at these championships, he powered home to touch the wall first in 1:55.41, which is also an age group and Bermuda record.
This was an incredible swim by Washington and that time has been a seasonal target set for him to achieve. Having made this target, he is now ready to enter the senior ranks of swimming.
PRELIMINARIES
The first event of this morning’s session was the 100m Backstroke.
Brett Smith, competing in the 13 Year Old Boys Age Group, started the morning as the 22nd seed. He swam an excellent race, with a time of 1:07.77, a new Personal Best by over a second. This advanced him by seven places in the standings to finish in 15th place, a very commendable performance.
Next was Emma Harvey, competing in the 14 Year Old Girls Age Group. Harvey started strong on the first 50, but the second lap was a struggle, settling for a time of 1:09.24, for 12th place as the second alternate for tonight’s final.
The last Bermuda Backstroke competitor was Madelyn Moore, competing in the 15 Year Old Girls Age Group. She also started strong but faded somewhat on the second 50, posting a time of 1:09.16 with a tie for 18th place in the standings.
