It was an outstanding day of swimming for the Bermuda team at the Canadian Age Group Championships in Quebec City, as all four team members made Finals.

FINALS

After an excellent morning, where all four swimmers on the Bermuda team advanced to finals, the scene was set for an exciting evening of swimming.

Emma Harvey captured her second Bronze Medal of the meet as she tied for third place in the 14 Year Old Girls 50m Backstroke with a time of 31.11 which was a Personal Best and a new Age Group Record.

Madelyn Moore, competing in the 15 Year Old Girls 50m Backstroke Final, she had an excellent swim for 5th place. Her time of 30.53 broke her Age Group Record for the second time today. As an indication of the quality of the field, less than 4/10ths of a second separated the first five places.

Brett Smith rounded out the 50m Backstroke event for Bermuda in the 13 Year Old Boys event, he managed to drop 1/10th of a second in the final, establishing a new Personal Best of 30.65, in settling for 9th place.

Moore also competed in the 100m freestyle, with her second 5th place finish of the evening, with a time of 58.90. This was a great race for Moore, which came very close to her personal best.

Jesse Washington rounded out the evening for the Bermuda team with a superb and intelligent swim in the 100m Freestyle Final for 16 Year Old Boys.

A mere 2/100ths of a second kept him from the bronze medal, as he had to settle for 4th place. His time of 53.12 was a Personal Best and a new Age Group Record.

Coach Richard Goodwin said, “I cannot ever recall a previous occasion in an international meet of this calibre, where the entire team has made finals and then come back to go even faster than their times in the morning’s heats, with a full suite of personal bests and records. It was truly a great day for these young athletes and I am elated to see them rewarded for all of their hard work”.

PRELIMINARIES

Emma Harvey swam the 100m Freestyle as her bonus event, touching the wall in 1:01.97 and finishing in 23rd place in the 14 Year Old Girls rankings.

Next up in the 15 Year Old Girls 100m Freestyle was Madelyn Moore. She took out the first 50 with strength and determination and put her feet on the wall in 3rd place. Coming home on the second 50 was more of an effort, but she touched the wall in 59.64, placing her 5th in her heat and good enough for 7th place.

Rounding out the 100m Freestyles was Jesse Washington, who swam a very strategic race to place 5th overall for the 16 Year Old Boys final with a time of 53.48.

The next block of events for the Bermuda team was the 50m Backstroke.

Brett Smith made his second Final of the meet with an excellent swim, cutting over a second off of his personal best with a time of 30.76 and putting him in 6th place for the 13 Year Old Boys event.

During the 14 Year Old Girls Preliminaries, Harvey also placed 6th for the Final with her time of 31.88 in a hotly contested heat.

Finally, Moore rounded off the morning with a superb swim, as she dipped under 31 seconds for the first time, touching the wall in 30.97; which is a new Personal Best, as well as setting a new Age Group Record.
