Day 2 - XXVII Carifta Championships Update

Bermuda Win 3 More Medals on Day Two, Jesse Washington Wins 2 Gold and Shannon Hassell Wins Silver

Day Two of the 2012 Carifta Swimming Championships got underway in Nassau, Bahamas and hosted by the Bahamas Swimming Federation, all nine Bermudian swimmers entered the water for the morning session.

Bermuda is looking inline to gain further Medals come Finals as the nine Bermuda Swimmers competed in Preliminaries in the morning session in the Long Course event, they managed to get 13 personal best times from the heats.

Shannon Hassell has reached the 11-12 Girls 200 Meter Freestyle Final after finishing 5th with a time of 2:27.79 in the preliminaries, dropping 5 seconds off her personal best, while Madelyn Moore finished 17th overall in a time of 2:34.73.

Jesse Washington recorded the fastest qualifying time in the 11-12 Boys 200 Meter Freestyle when he touched the wall in a time of 2:12.59, while Aaron Rego finished 20th with a time 2:35.25.

During the 13-14 Boys 200 Meter Freestyle preliminaries, Philip Hagen finished 13th with a time of 2:10.74, meanwhile Ashley Yearwood will be looking to stand on the podium later after she recorded the third fastest qualifying time during the 15-17 Girls 200 Meter Freestyle clocking 2:12.12.

In the 15-17 Boys 200 Meter Freestyle preliminaries Benedict Parfit finishing 14th with a time of 2:04.81, Washington once again recorded the fastest qualifying time during the 11-12 Boys 50 Meter Butterfly when he touched the wall in 29.35, while Rego finished 21st overall with a time of 33.92.

Yearwood reached the 15-17 Girls 50 Meter Butterfly Finals after she finished 7th in the preliminaries with a time of 30.61, while Parfit finished 13th in the 15-17 Boys 50 Meter Butterfly clocking 27.23 and Nicholas Patterson finished 15th with a time of 27.55.

Hassell will also line up for the 11-12 Girls 100 Meter Backstroke Final after she finished the preliminaries with the 2nd fastest time of 1:15.13, while Moore finished 15th with a time of 1:22.03.

Hagen’s time of 1:13.29 saw him finish the 13-14 Boys 100 Meter Backstroke preliminaries in 16th, while Yearwood will go into the 15-17 Girls 100 Meter Backstroke Final as the favorite following her fastest qualifying time of 1:08.63 during the preliminaries, Katrina Beveridge finished 16th with a time of 1:16.12.

Washington won the 11-12 Boys 200 Meter Freestyle Final to win his second Gold Medal of the Games after he touched the wall in a time of 2:07.95. Ten minutes later Washington returned to win the 11-12 Boys 50 Meter Butterfly Gold Medal when he finished first in a time of 28.92.

Hassell won her second Medal of the Games when she finished second in the 11-12 Girls 100 Meter Backstroke Final in a time of 1:13.72, Hassell then finished 5th in the 11-12 Girls 200 Meter Freestyle Final after she clocked a time of 2:22.62.

Yeadwood made her first Final appearance in the 15-17 Girls 200 Meter Freestyle, where she finished 5th with a time of 2:10.64, which turned out to be another Age Group Record, Yearwood then competed in the 15-17 Girls 50 Meter Butterfly Final where she finished 8th with a time of 30.47. Yearwood finished off the evening by finishing 5th in the 15-17 Girls 100 Meter Backstroke Final when she touched the wall in a time of 1:07.88.
