The XXVII Carifta Championships Underway

Jesse Washington Wins Bermuda 2 Medals and Shannon Hassell Wins One on Day One

The 2012 Carifta Swimming Championships got underway in Nassau, Bahamas and hosted by the Bahamas Swimming Federation, all nine Bermudian swimmers entered the water.

Shannon Hassell has qualified for the 11-12 Girls 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final after recording the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries clocking 34.53, which was .65 of a second faster than her seeded time. Madelyn Moore will also swim in the Final after she took almost 2 seconds off of her previous Personal Best time, she finished with the eighth fastest time in the preliminaries clocking 35.69.

Jesse Washington has also qualified for the 11-12 Boys 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final, this after he recorded the second fastest time of 31.84 in the preliminaries, while Aaron Rego recorded the 20th fastest time of 36.39.

Ashley Yearwood reached the 15-17 Girls 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Finals after she recorded the fourth fastest time of 31.57 in the preliminaries. Katrina Beveridge finished 18th overall with a time of 34.63.

During the 15-17 Boys Long Course Meter Backstroke preliminaries, Benedict Parfit reached the Finals after clocking the eighth fastest time of 29.09, while Nic Patterson finished 20th overall with a time of 30.41.

Jesse Washington lined himself up to win a Gold Medal when he won the 11-12 Boys 100 Long Course Meter Butterfly when he clocked the fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries touching the wall in 1:07.90, taking 2 seconds off his best time, qualifying second for the finals and setting the New Age Group Record while Aaron Rego finished 20th overall with a time of 1:21.36.

Yearwood also reached the 15-17 Girls 100 Long Course Meter Butterfly Finals when she recorded the eighth fastest qualifying time of 1:08.93 in the preliminaries, while Patterson finished the 15-17 Boys 100 Long Course Meter Butterfly preliminaries 18th overall with a time of 1:01.05.

Hassell won Bermuda’s first Medal when she captured a Bronze Medal in the 11-12 Girls 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke when she finished third with a time of 34.08, while Washington won a Gold Medal during the 11-12 Boys 100 Long Course Meter Butterfly Final when he finished first with a time of 1:06.32, he then won a Silver Medal with a second place finish in the 11-12 Boys 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final when he touched the wall in a time of 32.00.

In the 11-12 Girls 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final Moore finished 6th with a time of 35.46, Yearwoods time of 31.65 during the 15-17 Girls 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final saw her finish 6th, while Parfit finished 8th in the 15-17 Boys 50 Long Course Meter Backstroke Final with a time of 28.64.

Yearwood finished 7th in the 15-17 Girls 100 Long Course Meter Butterfly Final with a time of 1:08.02.
