In March of 2011, Football great Lawrence Taylor was officially declared a sex offender for bedding a teen. Taylor was sentenced to six years’ probation in Rockland County Court for patronizing a prostitute and sexual misconduct. Taylor’s probation ends the same year Bermuda will host the Americas Cup.
According to another media source in Bermuda, Taylor is a headliner for the Bermuda Golf Classic set to take place in Bermuda which is sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA).
Islandstats.com contacted the BTA to ask if they knew Taylor was the headliner and if they knew of his criminal record?
Bermuda Tourism Authority Director of Public & Stakeholder Relations Glenn Jones responded, “I can confirm the BTA is a sponsor of the Bermuda Golf Classic. We’ll have much more to say about this when we unveil the Tourism Authority’s complete golf tourism strategy to all media in a few weeks. The Bermuda Golf Classic committee would be responsible for determining who is invited to the event. So we defer to them."
Taylor has lived a controversial lifestyle, during and after his playing career. He admitted to using drugs such as cocaine as early as his second year in the NFL, and was suspended several times by the league for failing drug tests. His drug abuse escalated after his retirement, and he was jailed three times for attempted drug possession. From 1998 to 2009, Taylor lived a sober, drug-free life. He worked as a color commentator on sporting events after his retirement, and pursued a career as an actor. His personal life came under public scrutiny in 2011 when he pled guilty to sexual misconduct involving a 16-year old girl.
