Camiko Smith summed up his performance from the John Shippen National Invitational that took place at the Detroit Golf Club which was a Two Day Qualifier for 1 spot in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Smith said, “The final round was more about the mental control. I knew I had to make up ground fast if I was going to have any chance of qualifying. My goal was to at least get to four to have a chance to win or get into a playoff. The strategy was to play aggressive but smart, hit more fairways, and be sharper with my approach shots into greens which gave me better birdie opportunities.”
“I was feeling extremely confident going into the last round and it showed, I rolled in a few putts on the first nine holes which put me at even par through nine and even par for the round. Heading to the last nine holes I needed to make something happen, I went on to birdie 13 & 14 and get myself to two under for the day, unfortunately, I went on to make bogey on 15 and pars on the closing holes where I would finish my round at one-under-par and even par for the tournament,” continued Smith.
Smith went on to say, “I’m feeling really good about the trajectory my game is on. I’ve been working with my coach to tighten up a few things swing-wise. He has me using DECADE Course Management System, to help me to better my shot patterns which help manage my game better.”
Smith concluded, “This was my first to Detroit, and enjoyed it! The atmosphere of the event was amazing being it was the Monday of the PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic there were spectators and volunteers on the course watching us play along with several PGA Tour players that were there for practice rounds!”
