Ocean View Celebrate 63rd Anniversary

Rev. Lowe & Premier Dunkley Shaking Hands

The Ocean View Golf & Country Club once again celebrated the most notable day of year for them recently.

Sunday February 12th began as usual with a transcendent church service officiated by the Rev. Rudolph Ebbin. The audience was led into different components of the service from a rendition of the history by Joyce Dice to being serenaded by Maxwell Maybury. The opening prayer was delivered by Jill Burt.

It was the time for the club, families of the founders, and founding members to reflect and respectfully remember the sacrifices made in the past to enable people of color to play golf on island.

This year was monumentally special because the club was awarded the opportunity to honor the Rev. Vernon Lowe. Rev Lowe and Harrison Simons are the only two surviving members of the original executive body of the club. Rev Lowe resides in the United States and happened to be on the island for this prestigious event.

The service was followed by a 8 a.m. Shotgun Golf Tournament which Rev. Lowe competitively participated with the Premier Michael Dunkley, the chairman of the Board of Trustees Mark Crockwell and executive member Larry Brangman.

The prize-giving ceremony presents various trophies given to the club in memory of loved ones who served on the original executive committee. The luncheon was attended in excess of 90 family, guests and members.

All were tastefully educated with a stunning historical path led by Rev Lowe which told of the challenges and obstacles that were faced in the 50’s and early 60’s.

Ocean View has progressed developmentally of late however there is so much more room for advancement.

The historical significance of the club remains just as strong and resilient as it did 50 years ago with dedicated staff, a loyal executive and a committed membership body. It is the hope that golfers would take advantage of the opportunity to connect with the club at the most reasonable membership rates on the island and that non golfers would want to join and be a part of the growth of a legendary club.

Ocean View continues to appreciate the memories past while anticipating a new and exciting future.
