Day 3 Phoenix Match Play Championships

Action from Belmont Hills
IslandStats.com
The rain held off over Belmont Hills Golf Course for the Quarter-Final Round of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association’s Phoenix Match Play Championships as the top eight players in each Division were in action.

Cory DeSilva, fresh off his upset victory over Khari Place in round one, pushed top seed and defending champion, Scott Gilbertson, all the way to the 18th hole, however, Gilbertson held DeSilva off for a 1 up victory. Gilbertson will play Mitchell Campbell in the first Semi-Final, as Campbell saw off his younger brother Walker by a margin of 4 and 3 to take home family bragging rights.

Medalist and number two seed Thomas Allkins was also tested today, holding off Justin Dixon-Watts 2 and 1 to move into the Semi-Finals.

The most exciting match of the day was a back and forth affair between number three seed Arriek Douglas and the sixth seed Sam Wehmeyer. After being 3 down through 8 holes, Douglas stood on the 17th tee leading by a 2 up margin, however, a Bogey at 17 and a ball out of bounds on 18 opened the door for Wehmeyer to square the match and force extra holes. Wehmeyer drained a long Birdie putt on the 21st hole to complete the upset, setting up a Semi-Final clash with Thomas Allkins.

The Open Red Division saw the most surprising result of the week so far, with number eight seed Jordan Saunders upsetting the Medalist and number one seed Kheary Swan 6 and 5. The other three Quarter-Finals saw the lower seeds all prevail. Mikus Ming defeated William Gray 6 and 4 to set up a Semi-Final match up against Saunders, while Dakota Lamb defeated Theo Wolffe 6 and 5. The final match of the day saw James Robertson push Joe Waters all the way to the 18th, however, Waters showed his resolve and won the last for a 2 up victory.

There will be two consolation flights in each Division. In the Open Blue Consolation A, Khari Place and Evan Watkins will face each other in a 36 hole match, with the first round to take place tomorrow and the final round on Friday. The Red Open Consolation A sees the loan female in the competition, Emma Roberts, back in action against Kenny Leseur, with the winner to take on the waiting Kyrie Parfitt in Friday’s final. The players who lost today have been placed in the respective consolation B flights, where they will play Semi-Final matches on Thursday with the consolation finals on Friday.
