Round One of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association’s Phoenix Match Play Championships was completed, with many of the top seeds in each division receiving byes into the second round due to the number of participants.
In the Open Blue Division, Cory DeSilva pulled out what could be considered an upset over the more experienced Khari Place, winning 3 and 2. DeSilva’s win sets him up for a match with the defending champion, Scott Gilbertson in the second round.
In the only other match in the Open Blue Division, Justin Dixon-Watts held his nerve down the last hole to overcome Evan Watkins 2up. Dixon-Watts will be facing the 2012 Medalist and number two seed, Thomas Allkins in the second round.
The two other matches in the second round of the Open Blue Division will see the Campbell house divided as reigning Bermuda Open Amateur Division Champion Mitchell Campbell takes on his younger brother Walker, and the third seed Arriek Douglas takes on Sam Wehmeyer.
The Open Red Division saw the lower seeds all prevail to set up some enticing Quarter-Finals in round two. Jordan Saunders saw off the challenge of Kyrie Parfitt 4 and 3 to set up a match with medalist Kheary Swan, and Theo Wolfe prevailed over the youngest player in the field, eight year old Kenny Leseur, 5 and 4, setting up a match with second seed Dakota Lamb. The loan female in the competition, Emma Roberts, who has only been playing golf for 10 months, ran into James Robertson in scintillating form as he covered the first 7 holes in even par and Robertson managed to hold on for an 8 and 7 victory. Robertson may need to recapture that form in the second round where he will take on Joe Waters.
The second round in the Open Red Division will also see Mikus Ming taking on William Gray who each had byes today.
