Despite losing three of the five players who led it to the Sun Conference title a year ago, Mark Phillips and his University of South Carolina Beaufort Men's Golf teammates are in position to repeat as the conference champion after two rounds at Southern Hills Plantation.
South Carolina Beaufort posted a team score of 600 on the tournament opening day, shooting 294 and 306 to take a one-shot lead into the final round.
Webber International (601) is second, followed by St. Thomas (608), Northwood (614) and Johnson & Wales (616). Embry-Riddle is sixth at 620, followed by Southeastern (625), SCAD Savannah (627) and Warner (652).
The two returning players from last year's conference championship squad led South Carolina Beaufort, as senior Jack Bingham shot 71-75—146 and is tied for third, and fellow senior Luke McClellan is tied for sixth after 73-76—149.
Bingham is one shot off the pace set by Omar Tejeira of St. Thomas and Jens Johansson of Webber International.
South Carolina Beaufort's Phillips is also in the top 10, tied for eighth at 72-80—152. Brian Langley (78-76—154) and Travis Cashion (84-79—163) rounded out South Carolina Beaufort's lineup.
