The First Round of Matches took place in the Bermuda Golf Association’s Amateur Match Play Championships at the Mid Ocean Club.
Mother Nature has been intent with showing her presence with high winds and low temperatures. After a hard fought two round qualifier, players were anxious to forget about score and focus on only playing their competitors.
The Ladies Division certainly had one of the most talked about matches as number one seed and past champion Katrin Burnie almost fell to number 8 seed Lori Goodwin. Goodwin had the lead for most of the front nine with very steady play and great tee shots putting her in place to apply pressure to Burnie, however, playing her home course came into play and Burnie clawed her way back to being even after hole 17. Both players were short of the green on the final hole and Goodwin hit a “miracle” shot out of the sand trap to 10 feet. Burnie however chipped on to the green and made her putt while watching Goodwin’s putt pass the hole.
In the Men’s Division, the top three qualifiers enjoyed a day off with each receiving a bye in the first round. The matches taken place however saw some dominance with Spencer Wideman defeated Roddy Masters 7 and 6, while Ian Page defeated Walter Jackson 5 and 3.
