In a game that saw six-ties and three lead changes, Erica Woods and her University of Marshall Women’s Basketball teammates fell short versus Eastern Kentucky, 64-55, at the Cam Henderson Center.
“I didn’t like our approach to mistakes we made,” Marshall coach Matt Daniel said. “I don’t think we used them to fuel ourselves. I think we just brushed them off, and we have to be a lot better than that. We have to be more competitive than that. Ultimately, that’s on me.”
The score was tied four times in the first seven minutes of play, but at the 13:07 mark, Marshall kicked off a four-minute, 14-to-2 run to go up, 23-11, with 7:54 to go. Juniors AJ Johnson and Chukwuka Ezeigbo led the way for Marshall in the first half, each contributing eight points.
Marshall led by as many as 13 during the first 20 minutes, with a 25-12 advantage at the 6:28 mark. Despite Marshall’s double-digit lead, Eastern Kentucky responded with a 9-to-2 run of their own to bring the score to 27-21 with 2:25 before the half.
At the midway point, Marshall led by eight points with the score at 31-23, but Eastern Kentucky opened the second half on a 10-to-2 run to tie it all at 33 apiece with 15:49 left to play. The teams would trade leads twice more before knotting the score at 45 with 7:03 remaining, however, Marshall would not lead again. Marshall came within one point, down, 52-51, with 3:53 to go, but could not eclipse the gap. Led by Marie Carpenter’s 29 points, the Colonels came out on top, 64-55.
