Race Walking, is a long-distance discipline within the Sport of Athletics, Race Walking was introduced as an Olympic Sport during the 1908 Games in London.
The term Race Walking has long been a feature of many local Road Races, with many that compete indicating that the person in front of them is running.
Plans are now under way to formalize it as a competitive sport under the umbrella of the Bermuda National Athletic Association and its affiliate members.
Race Walking Bermuda is holding Bermuda’s Second Race Walking seminar on Saturday January 16th at Bermuda College when Jeff Salvage returns, this time he will have with him four athletes who will do a demonstration on Friday Night January 15th during the Front Street Mile.
Brenton Roberts Chairman of Race Walking Bermuda said, “We are hoping to offer our young people the chance to qualify for Major Events through Race Walking, there are also College Scholarships that can be obtained through Race Walking.”
Sinclair Smith who is part of the Bermuda Race Walking Committee holds sessions at the National Sports Center weekly said, ““A lot of people are walking but they lack technique. If you come to the seminar, you will learn how to use your arms along with your legs. Most important is consistency and you must do it consistently to get the benefits.”
Smith and Mike Watson are currently holding Race Walking sessions in the Schools and are looking to include more in the very near future.
