Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Ashley Berry to learn more about the Paget, Bermuda native.
GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke. Ashley Berry: Definitely having a team of girls that are focused on athletics, as well as academics, with an interest similar to mine, Duke’s great reputation and the facilities they have to offer, as well as the great coaching staff.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite competition-related memory? Ashley Berry: Last season I just started running the steeple chase and I was a little uncertain of how it would go. I had a really good season and I think the highlight of that was qualifying for ECACs because it was my first big meet after the school year was done. I ran a [personal record] and ended up winning my heat so it was really exciting to see that progress as I started the race only a few months earlier.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite memory away from competition? Ashley Berry: One of my freshman experiences was when I saw one of the bench burnings after one of the UNC vs. Duke games. I was really excited and felt the community with all of the students, not just the athletes.
GoDuke.com: Name three of your favorite restaurants in Durham. Ashley Berry: I definitely love Lilly’s, Mad Hatter’s pancakes and Nanatacos.
GoDuke.com: Name three foods that you can’t live without. Ashley Berry: Oatmeal, pizza and watermelon.
GoDuke.com: Name three things that motivate you to perform. Ashley Berry: Running for the other girls on your team, definitely, especially in the cross country season where the team aspect is a little stronger, and just knowing that it’s for them as well as yourself. I guess wanting to make my family and coach proud and just wanting to see how far I can push myself to overcome boundaries that I didn’t think I could.
