Freshman Colleen Schmidt recorded a first-place finish for the first time in her collegiate career to lead Ashley Berry and the Duke Women’s Cross Country team to the team title at the Three Stripe Red Shirt Invitational at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C.
Schmidt clocked 17:57 to take first in the field of 27 in the 5K women's race. Five other Duke runners also placed inside the top 15, with sophomore Gabby Levac coming in second behind Schmidt at 18:02. As a team, Duke scored 16 points to claim the team title.
Berry clocked a time of 18:57 to finish 13th overall.
"We saw a lot of improvement from previous races," said head coach Kevin Jermyn. "Schmidt was feeling pretty good about how she progressed ... It was a good developmental race."
