Rough Start in Spain for Bermuda Optimist Sailors

Sophia Dias, Trystan Hocking, Riley Lowe, and Cody Rans all began competing in the International Optimist Dinghy Association European Championships Boys and Girls fleets in the Bay of Cadiz in a south-westerly wind between 12 and 15 knots. taking place in Spain.

Two races took place on Day One, with the Bermuda sailors struggling on the opening day.

In the Girls Division, Dias is in 80th, with 82 points, Dias finished the first race 23rd, in the second race Dias was deemed UFD (a ruling where a boat is deemed to have prematurely started a race that is started under “U” Flag and is disqualified from that race and awarded the maximum number of points).

Lowe came off the water in the 96th place spot with 95 points, this after she finished 46th in the first race, and then 49th in the second race.

In the Boy’s Division, Rans is in 133rd with 86 points, he crossed the line 42nd in the first race, before finishing 44th in the second race of the day.

Hocking is in 142nd, with 90 points, he finished the first race in 42nd, and then finished 48th in the second race of the day.
