Bermudian Trio to Compete in National Championships

A trio of Bermuda Sailors will compete in School National Sailing Championships, Connor Astwood, along with Mackenzie Cooper and younger brother Chase Cooper will all be sailing this weekend.

Mackenzie Cooper will be part of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland team competing in the College Sailing U.S. National Team Racing Championships in San Diego. The St. Mary’s College of Maryland team are ranked 5th in the Nation going into the event.

Astwood will be representing Boston University. Both he and Mackenzie are Red Bull Team Bda team members.

The College Sailing/ LaserPerformance Team Race Championship brings together 16 of the country’s best team racing teams for a three-day championship competing for the Walter C. Wood Trophy. Each team has three boats and teams face off against each other one at a time, after a round robin, when a team races against all the others, the top eight teams will split off for a round robin to narrow it down to the top four who will then compete in a “Final Four”.

Chase Cooper and his team from Tabor Academy qualified for the High School National Championships when they were runners-up in the NESSA New England Championships last weekend. Tabor Academy will be traveling to Anacostia, Washington to compete for the Interscholastic Sailing Association’s (ISSA) Baker Trophy.
