Surgery Saves French Skipper Cammas’ Foot

Team France's America's Cup skipper has been told he will have full use of his right foot after suffering a horrendous training accident.

Franck Cammas has had successful surgery after sustaining a double shinbone fracture.

The 42-year-old fell from the foiling catamaran during training at Quiberon and had his leg sliced by the rudder.

The 32-foot catamaran was reportedly going at a speed of about 25 knots in strong winds when the accident happened.

Cammas was rushed to hospital by helicopter.

The team said he will be sidelined for several weeks before starting rehabilitation in January.

"Thanks to all of you. These messages touch my heart and give me even more courage to come back as soon as possible," Cammas said on the team's website.

Doctors told Cammas that he would not lose the use of his right foot, and that the arteries and nerves had not been impacted, a Press Association report said.

Team France suggested Cammas' rehabilitation would be lengthy and would place a question mark over his ability to sail at next year's Rio Olympics.

"Words aren't easy to find in times of crisis," Groupama Team France manager Bruno Dubois said.

"We'll keep focusing on our common goals. Of course I hope to see Franck back at the helm as soon as possible."

Cammas, a world class multi-hull sailor, has been the driving force behind France's return to the America's Cup scene with an eye on Bermuda 2017.
