Americas Cup Dates for 2017 Released

IslandStats.com
Stuff.co.nz are reporting that the next America's Cup final will take a five-day break between races in Bermuda 2017.

A tentative programme has been released for the 2017 event that takes in May and June racing on a tight course in the Great Sound on the tiny island.

The feature is a significant gap in the actual final between Oracle Team USA and the yet to be determined challenger.

The final's format sees seven wins required to claim the Auld Mug.

They will contest the first four races on Saturday and Sunday, June 17th and 18th.

But organizers have opted to then put the final on hold until the following weekend with the teams given five days to make adjustments.

Two races are planned for Saturday, June 24th and two more on Sunday if required. The schedule has two races penciled for the following Monday and three races for Tuesday, June 27th if the full quota of 13 races are needed to find a champion.

At the last cup final in San Francisco in 2013 the full schedule was needed for Oracle to retain the trophy 9-8 in a remarkable comeback against Team New Zealand.

The Louis Vuitton qualifiers in Bermuda will be a round-robin series featuring 30 races over two rounds from May 26th to June 5th with just one day's break in the middle.

The Louis Vuitton challenger playoffs featuring the top four teams runs from June 7th-9th. The Louis Vuitton challenger final is a first to five affair scheduled for June 10th-12th.

Given the number of cancelled days at the last regatta for a variety of reasons, that looks like an ambitious schedule.

The winning challenger faces a potential five days off to get ready to sail against Oracle for the America's Cup.

The regatta also features a Youth America's Cup with four fleet races on June 21st-22nd and J-Class and Superyacht action.
