Last weekend Bermudians competed in the annual British University Match Racing Championship, the final event in the year for University Match Racing.
Jason and Jordan Saints represented Exeter University with Emily Nagel competing on a team from Southampton University.
Fourteen teams headed down to Weymouth to compete in the three-day event raced in Elliott 16s.
The team from Exeter consisted of Jason Saints (Helm), Tarra Gill-Taylor (Mainsheet) and Jordan Saints (Bow).
The first day of the event consisted of strong winds, 25+ knots. In the round robin the fleet was divided into two Divisions. The team faced a tough division with most of the top ranked sailors in it.
The team qualified first through to the quarter final with 5 wins and only 1 loss. In the Quarter-Finals Exeter was paired with Bristol.
The team convincingly won two straight races to qualify for the Semi-Finals. Sunday presented the teams with new conditions to adapt to with winds beginning very light and building to around 10kts later in the day.
In the Semi-Finals Exeter raced against Conner Miller and his team from Loughborough and the first with 3 wins progressed to the Finals. We were evenly matched with really close tough races in the light winds.
Jason and the Exeter team had good starts and the team worked well to achieve better boat speed. The Semi-Finals were very close, coming down to the very last race to decide who progressed to the finals.
Exeter managed to finish this round off with a strong last race, winning to progress to the finals. The team had a close-matched final but finished second to Solent. The Exeter team were thrilled with this result, finishing 2nd and receiving BUCS Points for the University.
