Aston Villa Women have appointed Natalia Arroyo as their new head coach, bringing an end to Shaun Goater's interim spell in charge.
The 38-year-old Spaniard, who left Real Sociedad at the end of last season, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Villa, pending visa approval.
This news adds extra spice to Villa's upcoming Women's Super League clash against Manchester City, as Goater prepares to face his former club in his final game as interim manager. The City legend not only enjoyed a successful playing career with the men's team but also served as assistant coach to Gareth Taylor last season.
"I was always looking forward to this and it will feel weird, but we're all professional," Goater said. "I'm going there to play the game and look to try to get a win."
He acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating: "All the people at Man City, I know and respect them. They're a good team with a good manager who play a good way, and it will be a tough game, but we want to try to bring our game as well."
Meanwhile, Manchester City Women's coach Gareth Taylor expressed his anticipation for the encounter against his former assistant, teammate, and friend.
"Obviously they have a new manager now, but it’ll be good to see Shaun first and foremost, but they’ve probably changed things," said Taylor.
While Goater had expressed his desire to take the Villa job permanently, he is likely to remain at the club in another capacity. Taylor acknowledged the potential advantage of Goater's inside knowledge of the City team, adding an intriguing dimension to this weekend's clash.
This match promises to be an emotional occasion for Goater, as he bids farewell to the managerial role and faces his former club. With Arroyo waiting in the wings, Villa will be hoping for a positive result to mark the start of a new era under the Spanish coach.
