Shield & Friendship Final Round-Ups

The Paget Lions and PHC Zebras were victorious in the Shield and Friendship Trophy matches at the Somerset Cricket Club.

Paget Lions are Shield Champions

The Paget Lions edged Young Men Social Club 3 – 2 in a thriller in the Shield Final.

In the 22nd minute, Antwan Russell had a 30-yard free-kick beat the wall and the goalkeeper giving the Paget Lions a 1 – 0 lead. Seven minutes later it was 2 – 0 when Russell beat the Young men Social Club goalkeeper from some 25 yards out with a right-footed blast. The Paget Lions would take that 2 – 0 lead to the break.

In the 75th minute, the Paget Lions would go ahead 3 – 0, substitute Omari Tucker would beat the goalkeeper and a defender before finding the back of the net. Three minutes later Young men Social Club pulled a goal back when Jinairo Johnson headed in from close range, David Jones Jr. would pull Young Men Social Club within one when he converted from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Paget would do enough to hold off a spirited Young men Social Club team in the final minutes to earn the win.

PHC Zebras are Friendship Trophy Champions

The North Village Rams and the PHC Zebras created chances in the first 45 minutes, but it would end scoreless.

The second half saw both teams going into tackles a little harder, forcing the referee to issue several yellow cards, and a few lucky not to see red.

North Village Rams thought they had taken the lead when a cross was headed in by Jalen Harvey however the referee’s whistle was blown just as the header was made for a foul in the box, minutes later they found themselves down 1 – 0, following a foul in the box, PHC Zebras captain Marco Warren stepped up and scored from the spot to give them the lead.

The North Village Rams piled on the pressure looking for the equalizer, they had a shot cleared off the line, they had substitute Owen Botelho unable to hit the target from his first touch from four yards out, and then with everyone thinking they had the equalizer a Jaizel Smith-DeShields header from inside the six-yard box bounced over the crossbar.

The PHC Zebras were able to hold off the challenge and lift the trophy.
