Live Free Football Tournament Announced
The Live Free Group will be hosting the 5th anniversary of the Live Free Football Tournament on Saturday July 9th 2016 at Saltus Field.

“The Group evolved after the murder of our dear friend Jason Smith on May 1st 2011. Jason had no gang affiliations; he was sadly in the wrong place at the wrong time,” a spokesperson said.

“Each of our lives transformed that day and as we worked through our grief, anger and many questions, we all agreed that we had to honor his memory and celebrate his life.

“In addition, since 2011, we’ve given a scholarship to a Saltus graduate and donated funds to charities such as, Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“Congratulations to Matthew DeFrias, the 2016 Jason Smith Live Free Award recipient! The award recognizes a student who has contributed to SGY life through sport, good humor, positive attitude and kind spirit.

“The tournament and scholarship has enabled us to meet the goal we set 5 years ago. Jason’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Smith have attended the event since inception and it is seeing the smiles on their faces that have made it all worth it.

“If you’re interested in entering a team in the tournament, please email livefreejay@gmail.com. Registration closes on June 10th 2016, spaces are limited and spots are reserved on a first come, first serve basis.

“The entry fee is $40.00 per player which includes a jersey, water bottle and bag. Players must be 16 years or older and teams must have a minimum of 7 players.

“We would like to thank the teams for their support and excitement each year. We would also like to give a special thank you to those who have sponsored the event, those who work behind the scenes, and those who volunteer their time.

“We are forever grateful to each and every person who has helped to make each tournament a success.”

“Those who died yesterday had plans for this morning and those who died this morning had plans for tonight. Don’t take life for granted.”
