Simons Nervous But Composed

IslandStats.com
Bermudian international Rai Simons scored his first professional goal in Chesterfield’s home defeat against Gillingham - but he would have gladly swopped the milestone for a Chesterfield win.

Simons, scored Chesterfield’s equalizer in just his second league start and the former Ilkeston youngster said, “Sam Morsy fed the ball through and I found myself in space on the edge of the box.

“I was a bit nervous but I tried to keep my composure. When I first got into position I thought I was just going to lash it, but I took a breath, took another touch, composed myself and hoped for the best and in went in.

“I got my first professional goal, so I’m happy with that, but the result does spoil it, I’d rather have won and not scored.”

Simons, who has played in World Cup qualifiers for his country, added: “It’s happening very quickly, quicker than I imagined, but I’m taking it in my stride.

“On a personal level I’m very pleased with how things are progressing. I have total confidence in my abilities.”

“When I’m on the ball I feel confident and comfortable, I’ll be looking to go out and score some more goals or whatever helps the team,” he added.

“There’s a big difference going from non-league to the professional game, you have to be more committed to your game and your lifestyle.

“I know the lifestyle comes with it so I have to deal with it to reach where I want to go.”

Simons will be hoping to keep his shirt for the weekend trip to Walsall but with the much more experienced Lee Novak expected to be fit, he may have to take his place on the bench once again.
