Freddy Hall and his Limerick Football Club teammates are now the co-holders of an unwanted record after losing 4-1 to Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium.
They equal Waterford United’s tally of 21 Premier Division games without a win as their remained rooted to the bottom of the table.
Limerick’s best opportunity of the opening half fell to Robbie Williams inside twenty minutes. Sean Russell’s corner from the left was swung in and found the Yorkshireman in space inside the six yard box. Williams just couldn’t climb high enough to make the right contact, and his header clipped the crossbar and went over. Limerick defended deep and well in the opening stages, but there was nothing they could do to prevent Brandon Miele’s opener after 34 minutes. He stuck from 30 yards – firing straight past Hall, who had little chance.
The game was put beyond Limerick after 53 minutes when Conor Kenna headed home from close range after a good delivery from Kieran Marty Waters’ free kick.
Limerick got their consolation on the hour mark when Barry Murphy failed to hold Shane Duggan’s shot and Ian Turner was on hand to fire in the rebound. That glimmer of hope didn’t last long however, as Brandon Miele played in North who squared to Paddy Cregg and he converted after rounding Hall to secure the points for Pat Fenlon’s men.
Miele doubled his tally on the day to add gloss to the scoreline – a clever flick from Gareth McCaffrey played in the midfielder to fire past Hall.
Meanwhile goals from Jay O'Shea, Armand Gnanduillet and Bermuda’s Rai Simons earned Chesterfield an away win in this pre-season friendly against Ilkeston a team that Simons once suited up for with a 3-1 victory.
With Chesterfield leading 2 – 1 with 21 minutes remaining, they reinstated their two-goal lead courtesy of Simons who met Gboly Ariyibi’s incisive cross before striking past a helpless Rachoni on the half-volley from around 12 yards.
