Recently the Bermuda Football Association announced the players and officials comprising the Bermuda Men’s U17 team who will compete in the Caribbean Football Union Under 17 World Cup Qualifiers in Bahamas.
www.islandstats.com took the time to meet the players, and we give you our viewers the chance to meet some positive young Men.
Bermuda has a player in the team traveling who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year. This prevented him from being selected for the U15 CONCACAF tournament as it was felt that he needed time to make the adjustment and learn to manage.
He has now been selected to travel with the U17’s to Bahamas and Mexico. Traveling in support is Sara McKittrick from the Bermuda Diabetes Association to aid the athlete and coaches with adjustment to competition schedules and management of his diabetes. McKittrick will be on the tour for the Bahamas leg, then allowing the athlete to demonstrate independence for Mexico with support of the coaches and physio.
McKittrick said, “People that type 1 diabetes does not have to be a handicap. This young man has been phenomenal in managing his condition and adjusting to the refocus training required as an elite athlete. His name is Zenawi Bowen.”
Meanwhile Osaggi Bascome has recently been on Trial with Lavente in Spain and will be signing to play for the Spanish Academy this upcoming year. Bascome had an outstanding tournament last year at the CONCACAF U15’s.
Judah Chapman continues to show improvement and development and has been rewarded with a new contract from the Wimbledon Academy in the UK, Jahkari Furbert has been in residency in Spain through the affiliated program of BAA.
Aaron Spencer is a member of the U17 national team. Spencer is a devout member of the Seven Day Adventist Church. He trains on a regular basis with Valencia FC but is restricted with participation in the Saturday Youth Leagues.
He is an outstanding player and travelled along with the NA select to the open cup in Alabama. While on tour he maintains his observation of the Sabbath in accordance with his beliefs.
