Smith and Gosport Borough Draw

IslandStats.com
At a wet and windy GDL Stadium, Jonte Smith and his Gosport Borough FC teammates were held to a 2-2 draw against promotion-chasing Sutton United.

After a sensational victory at North Ferriby three days before in the FA Trophy, Alex Pike's Gosport Borough had to regain focus and attempt to overcome a Sutton United side who sat fourth in the league.

Gosport started the brightest of the side's and came close to breaking the deadlock through Mike Gosney and Jamie Brown.

Sutton were finding it difficult to keep possession and struggled to contain a confident, offensive Gosport side.

Just after the thirty minute mark, Gosport Borough were awarded a penalty when Andy Forbes burst into the Sutton area, only to be fouled by Simon Downer.

The reliable Sammy Igoe stepped up to rifle the ball past Jason Brown in the visitors' goal to put the home side one-up.

Just five minutes later, Gosney unleashed a sensational strike from 30-yards out to put Gosport two goals up, leaving the 'keeper with no chance, and slotting home a contender for goal-of-the-season.

On the stroke of half-time Sutton pulled a goal back.

Sutton United’s Simon Downer met a deep, floating corner with a bullet header that left Ashmore helpless and rooted to the spot.

The second-half began with the away side in the ascendency, without creating any clear-cut opportunities.

Just before the hour-mark, Sutton felt they should've too been awarded a penalty when striker Damian Scannell was challenged by Sam Pearce in Gosport's box, but the referee waved away any such appeals.

With twenty minutes remaining, former Tottenham striker Jamie Slabber pulled the away side level.

Another corner wasn't dealt with by the Gosport defence and following goalmouth scramble, Slabber poked the ball home past Ashmore.

The weather heavily effected the remainder of the fixture, with passes going astray regularly and no clear-cut chances were able to be created.
