Wells and Bradford City Win

Southend United ended the game with just eight men as their hopes of automatic promotion suffered a huge blow with a 2-0 against Nahki Wells and Bradford City.

Southend had both Sean Clohessy and Elliot Benyon sent off during the second half of a disastrous afternoon against struggling Bradford City.

And, six minutes from time, captain Chris Barker hobbled off injured, to complete a miserable match for Paul Sturrock’s side who will now find it incredibly hard to finish in the top three.

Bradford fully deserved their victory however, goalscoring opportunities and any real excitement remained at a minimum in the opening exchanges until Wells turned well on the edge of the penalty area and forced Southends goalkeeper in to a good save with a swerving 20 yard shot.

Bradford eased their relegation worries the win over play-off hopefuls Southend - who ended the match with nine men.

They went in front after 38 minutes when skipper Michael Flynn picked out leading scorer James Hanson at the far post and the striker scored with a downward header for his 13th goal of the season.

Bradford added a second in the 53rd minute after Flynn intercepted a misplaced pass and put Wells through on goal.

Wells was tripped by Sean Clohessy, who was sent off, and Craig Fagan scored from the spot.

Southend were reduced to nine men in the 69th minute when Elliot Benyon was sent off just 10 minutes after coming on as substitute when he appeared to kick out at Bradford left-back Rob Kozluk.
