The Alabama women’s tennis team kicked off the season on a roll, sweeping Tyler Smith and her Jackson State Women’s tennis teammates, 4-0, and, 7-0, in the season opener doubleheader at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
In the morning session, Alabama started doubles play with junior Andie Daniell and sophomore Alba Cortina-Pou defeating Lucia Solis and Smith, 6-1, while senior Smith Hinton and sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier topped Oni Jones and Ariel Dickson, 6-1.
In singles play, Alabama snatched the first three matches to secure the 4-0 sweep in straight sets. No. 106 Daniell defeated Smith, 6-0, 6-2, while Cortina-Pou beat Daria Butorina, 6-1, 6-0.
Furthermore, in her first collegiate dual meet of her career, freshman Kylie Moulin took care of Lucia Solis, 6-3, 6-3 to solidify Alabama’s first win of the season.
For the second half of the doubleheader, Alabama mirrored its morning doubles performance, winning the doubles point by shutting out Jackson State. Daniell and Moulin got past Smith and Solis, 6-0, while sophomore Ann Selim and Cortina-Pou, pushed past Jones and Dickson, 6-0.
In singles play, Selim defeated Jones in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to give Alabama a 2-0 lead after doubles. Gintrand then followed with a solid performance at the No. 6 position, defeating Dickson, 6-1, 6-1. For the win, Hinton beat Smith, 6-1, 6-0, to give Alabama its second victory of the day.
