Recently Pakistan coach Waqar Younis, in a strongly worded and revealing report, criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board's decision of not giving him a say in the selection process during his tenure, he also recommended that players be made to earn their place in the national squad with performances in domestic cricket.
www.islandstats.com asked a former player heavily involved in the National Programme to answer a few of the recommendation Younis put to Pakistan and how Bermuda are dealing with the same issues.
THE RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE
Q. Head coach should be the part of selection committee?
A. YES
Q. Chief selector should be someone who has played modern-era cricket and has a positive vision?
A. YES, PLAYERS AND PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW WHO THAT PERSON IS.
Q. The selection criteria should include and emphasize fitness and fielding as the first priority?
A. PLAYERS SHOULD COME FIT FROM THEIR CLUBS, CLUBS HAVE ALL THESE COACHES WHO GET PAID A LOT OF MONEY BUT DO NOT PRODUCE THE PLAYERS.
Q. Dietitians to be involved during all camps and junior tours?
A. THE WHOLE PROCESS FOR SENIORS SHOULD BE FOR JUNIORS NOTHING DIFFERENT.
Q. Does Domestic cricket needs to be restructured, fewer teams to play first-class cricket to improve the standard?
A. I WOULD SAY WE NEED TO HAVE A LARGER LEAGUE WE ARE TO SMALL A COUNTRY TO HAVE TO DIVISIONS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CUPMATCH AND COUNTY GAMES BE LOOKED AT TO HELP IMPROVE OUR CRICKET, BY THERE APPROACH TO THEIR COMPETITIONS.
Q. The high performance manager's post needs to be developed to oversee all performances of coaches, selectors, trainers and physio at both international and domestic level?
A. WE NEED TO FIND ONE I THOUGHT HEMP WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD PERSON TO FULFIL THE ROLE BECAUSE OF HIS EXPERIENCE.
Q. Ex-players to be involved at the domestic level to help youngsters?
A. THIS IS A CLUB THING MORE SO THEN THE BOARD, BUT THEY CAN ENCOURAGE IT WITH SOME DIRECTION.
Q. Emphasis on fielding and fitness at junior level?
A. OUR BEST COACHES SHOULD BE INCHARGE OF THESE PLAYERS NOT JUST ANYONE WHO PASSES A TEST.
Q. A team tours need to be organized on a regular basis to groom youngsters and give them overseas exposure?
A. BERMUDA NEEDS TO CONFIRM IF THEY ARE GOING TO PROVIDE THE A TEAM WITH A TOUR AND JUST NOT LIP SERVICE FOR THEM TO TRAIN AND MAKE THE NUMBERS UP.
Q. Selected players should be sent to various international academies to gain experience and exposure?
A. WE NEED TO FIND ACADEMIES TO SEND PLAYERS EITHER IN CANADA, USA OR ENGLAND. WE SHOULD ALSO TRY TO GET OUR TEAMS TO PLAY IN THE LEEWARD OR WINDWARD TOURNAMENT FOR ALL AGE GROUPS, WHICH WILL ALLOW FOR US TO HOST THEM FROM TIME TO TIME WHICH WILL ALSO ALLOW MORE PLAYERS AN OPPORTUNITY WITH HOME AND AWAY TOURS REGULAR.
