The team for the IAAF World Youth Championships has been selected. In reality for this event the athletes really select themselves by reaching the Qualifying Standard within the qualifying period which is October 1, 2012 to June 24th, 2013. The team is below:-
Kyrah Scraders 800m 2:10.93 with the standard 2:13.50 Taahira Butterfield 100m 12.14 with the standard 12.45 Justin Donawa Triple Jump 14.92m with the standard 14.60m
Donna Watson the President of the Bermuda National Athletics Association said, “We are very proud of these athletes and feel they will perform very well at this event up against the best in their age category in the World. We will be closely watching Scraders as she has had a great year and has come out as number 1 from Carifta to all of the races she has entered in Bermuda and will be great to see her compete with the best in the world. Justin had to move up to the U20 age group at Carifta but during this event he will be competing against athletes in his age category. Butterfield has only just returned from a meet in Florida where she ran a Personal Best and she also won the 100m National Championships so we are looking for a good performance from her. The team will be leaving around July 2nd as they will be attending a camp for a week before the competition which begins July. Traveling with the team will be Brian Wellman as coach and Mia Black as Team Manager.
Aaron Evans continues to improve in the 800m as he attempts to reach the Qualifying Standard for the IAAF World Championships. His first event he ran 1:48.68 and this event he ran 1:47.50 with the standard being 1:46.20. Evans and Arantxa King (Long Jump standard 6.65m) with her best leap this season 6.22m will be competing in the Jamaica National Championships this week in their attempt to reach the standards in their specific events.
