The last man to win the XL Bermuda Open Tennis Tournament back in 2008 has recorded one of his biggest wins of his career as Kei Nishikori knocked out defending champion Roger Federer in the third round of the Madrid Open, 6-4 1-6 6-2.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion fought back strongly after the 23-year-old had taken the opening set, but Nishikori broke in the fourth game of the decider and again in the final game to win.

"I'm disappointed with my match. The best man won," Federer said.

Earlier Rafael Nadal won his third round match, beating Mikhail Youzhny.

The 26-year-old Spanish fifth seed, seeking to win the tournament for a third time, has now seen two of his main rivals fall in the space of 48 hours.

Swiss second seed Federer's defeat follows Tuesday's shock exit for world number one Novak Djokovic at the hands of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Federer's conqueror Nishikori now plays Spanish wildcard Pablo Andujar in the quarter-finals.

Britain's Andy Murray returns to action on Thursday evening against France's Gilles Simon.
