CARIFTA SPOTLIGHT - ALEXANDER MCCALLUM
As we countdown to the 2013 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Jamaica, www.islandstats.com will be spotlighting the Athletes who will represent Bermuda. Today with we highlight Alexander McCallum, Born June 5th, 1998.

Q. How did you first get involved in Swimming?
A.
When I was little, I loved being in the water. I took swimming lessons and I really liked the sport so I joined Harbour.

Q. Did you have a particular swimming idol?
A.
At the time I joined I didn’t have an idol but recently I have come to admire Roland Schoeman who holds the 50 meter freestyle world record.

Q. When did you realize that you wanted to keep swimming?
A.
I realized that I didn’t want to quit swimming because I found that it was really good for me and kept me in good shape.

Q. What would you describe as your strongest discipline?
A.
My best stroke is the freestyle. I am better at sprints than long distance.

Q. Which do you feel needs the most improvement?
A.
I feel that my dives have plenty of room for improvement. My coach, Richard has been helping me.

Q. What one moment in Swimming to date are you most proud of?
A.
My most proud moment in swimming is when I got my first A time 3 years ago in the 50m free. I didn’t think I would ever be able to swim fast enough to get it.

Q. What are your goals for 2013?
A.
My goals for 2013 are to swim different events. I usually like to swim the same events at every swim meet and I would like to change that by trying different distances and competing in the other strokes.

Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you?
A.
I train 6 days a week. 3 days I train after school for 2 hours and the other 3 days I train early in the mornings before school for 1.5 hours. The early mornings are the probably the toughest part of swimming, but it wakes me up for the day.

Q. Have you seen the new 50 meter pool at the National Sports Center?
A.
Unfortunately I haven’t seen the new pool close enough to get a good look at it.

Q. If yes what do you think about it?
A.
I find it unfortunate that we will not be able to use it in the winter because it is too expensive to heat. However I still look forward to training in a 50m pool.

Q. What do you do when you’re not swimming?
A.
I don’t usually have a lot of spare time. When I’m not swimming I’m working on schoolwork. When I’m not doing school work I’m swimming. Sleeping in is a rarity. I’m also busy doing community service on the weekend.

Q. You are the president of BASA for one day, what drastic changes do you make?
A.
I think the president has a tough job and is already doing a great job so it would be hard to improve on his actions.
