Bermuda Go Down to Cuba

Taylor McHarg

Bermuda’s participation in the Junior Fed Cup continued in San Salvador, El Salvador. Today was a tough day for the Bermuda Fed Cup team, taking to the courts this morning against the Women's Number 1 Seeded, Cuba. Weather being overcast and very humid helped the Bermuda Girls a little.

First up this morning was Eva Frazzoni against Cuba's number 2 player Amanda Gomez. Gomez was very steady missing very little, but Frazzoni was able to make use of her variety of short balls and lobs to pull the young Cuban off balance. Unfortunately, Frazzoni's efforts were not enough and she finally succumbed, losing 6-1, 6-0.

Taylor McHarg then took to the court against the number 1 player for Cuba, Claudia Carrera. McHarg did well and kept loose, grinding out long rallies with Carrera. Several times during the match, however McHarg was able to secure leads in the game, but was unable to keep her footing and close them out. She went down in the first set 6-2. In the second set she stayed aggressive, working the point and going for angles. She was able to take a lead going up 2-1, but again as in the 1st set McHarg was unable to close out many game opportunities leading at times 40-0 or 15-40, McHarg ended up on the losing side 6-2, 6-2.

The tie being decided already the Girls teamed up determined to still fight and do their best, but the Cuban twosome were just too much to handle, with great movement at the next and few unforced errors. Cuba also secured the doubles 6-2, 6-0.

This tournament thus far has been a great experience for the girls where I have already seen improvement in the doubles, with more aggressive volley's and movement at the net. We continue to have training sessions to prepare for the many other tough matches to come.

Our Boys team was off today and has already held their morning training. The whole team continues to share great team moral and support for one another and is all ready for the challenges of tomorrow.
