As we countdown to the 2013 CARIFTA Games in The Bahamas, www.islandstats.com will be spotlighting the Athletes who will represent Bermuda. Today with we highlight Nate Hartwig, Born May 28th, 1996.
Q. How did you first get involved in Track and Field? A. Last year, I began running cross country races after the end of the cycling and triathlon season. After placing in those races and qualifying for Bermuda’s NACAC team, I started training for the 5000m with the Flyers Track Club.
Q. Did you have a particular Track idol? A. I admire Eric Liddell, “The Flying Scotsman.” Not only did he shatter the Olympic and World Records for the 400m in the 1924 Paris Olympics, he served as a missionary in the extreme poverty of Northern China.
Q. When did you realize that you wanted Compete Internationally? A. Immediately after I was informed that I’d qualified for the Bermuda NACAC team, I made it my next goal to compete in CARIFTA.
Q. What would you describe as your strongest discipline? A. The 5000 meter run.
Q. Which do you feel needs the most improvement? A. The 1500 meter run, I’d like to develop greater speed.
Q. What one moment in your Sport to date are you most proud of? A. Setting my personal best 10k time during the International Race Weekend.
Q. What are your goals for the rest of 2013? A. Continuing to improve my 5000m and 1500m times.
Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you? A. Mon/Wed: track days, higher intensity sets, e.g., 200’s, 400’s and 1200’s. Tue: 4 mile recovery jog. Thu: rest day (stretching!). Friday, longer tempo run, roughly 10km. Sat/Sun: competition days, track meets on Sat afternoons, and road races early Sunday.
Q. Did you compete in the 2013 CARIFT Games at the National Sports Center? A. No.
Q. What do you do when you’re not taking part in Track and Field? A. With college looming in the not-so-distant future, and AP courses at Saltus keeping me challenged, I find reprieve in outdoor activities such as cycling and swimming.
Q. You are the president of BNAA for one day, what drastic changes do you make? A. I think good spirited interschool competition brings together the community of students, families, and teachers that form this island. I would change the athletic calendar so that (during the season) interschool track and field meets, open to the public for spectatorship, were held every Friday or Saturday night.
