The Department of Youth and Sport hosted the 32nd Annual Bermuda Sports Awards at the Fairmont Southampton.
Tyrone Smith beat out fellow Olympians Tyler Butterfield and Roy-Allen Burch to be crowned the Male Athlete of the Year. Smith qualified for the Men’s Long Jump during the 2012 London Olympic Games with the 7th best leap in Group A of the Preliminaries leaping 7.97m, Smith finished 10th overall and during the London 2012 Olympic Games Men’s Long Jump Final, Smith bowed out finishing in 12th.
Meanwhile, Flora Duffy was crowned the Female Athlete of the Year, Duffy finished in 45th place competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games in Women’s Triathlon action. Duffy clocked a time of 2:08:54, in a field of 55 Women Triathletes. Duffy was involved in a Crash resulting in a Mechanical during the Bike Course. Duffy beat out fellow Olympians Arantxa King and Jillian Terceira.
Jessie Washington was crowned the 2012 Male Junior Athlete of the Year, during the 2012 Carifta Swimming Championships in The Bahamas, Washington won a total of 7 Medals in the 11-12 Boys Age Group, Washington won Gold in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle, Washington won a Silver Medal in the 50m Backstroke and a Bronze Medal in the 400m Freestyle.
During the XIX Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in El Salvador Junior Female Athlete of the Year Kyrah Scraders won a Gold Medal when she won the Girls 800m B Final clocking a time of 2:12.57, during the 2012 Carifta Games Scraders was the first Bermudian to capture a Medal when she claimed the Silver Medal in the Under 17 Girls 1500m race clocking a time of 4:55.46.
