The Bermuda Open is to be held from Monday March 18th to Thursday March 21st at the Port Royal Golf Course. This year the tournament will return to its original format which is that of a “true” open with all the participants, Professionals, Men’s Amateurs and Ladies Amateurs all playing off the black tees.
The Bermuda Open was traditionally held in October, unfortunately The Bermuda Golf Association (BGA) lost the dates to be able to hold the Open in October when the PGA Grand Slam of Golf came to Bermuda and, the tournament has been moved to numerous different dates over the years in an effort to find a suitable time.
For the last two years the BGA have combined the Bermuda Open (which is geared toward the pros and low handicap amateurs), the Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship, the Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship, the Ladies Bermuda Senior Championship, and the Men’s Bermuda Senior Championships into one big tournament which was called the Bermuda Open Championships held in June.
Unfortunately this format has not worked with regard to attracting a suitable number of participants and the decision was made immediately following the tournament to split the tournaments back out again into five separate tournaments.
The Bermuda Seniors Championship will now be held in May at Riddells Bay and the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play Championships will still be held at Port Royal in June.
This year the BGA have taken a different approach to marketing the Bermuda Open and have attracted 25 Professional players of which 8 are local and 17 are from overseas and 12 amateurs which are split evening with 6 being local and 6 from overseas.
These numbers are up from last year when we only had 11 professionals playing in the Open with only two from overseas.
