 Smith Competing in 2012 IslandStats.com As we countdown to the 2013 CARIFTA Games in The Bahamas, www.islandstats.com will be spotlighting the Athletes who will represent Bermuda. Today with we highlight Chas Smith, Born August 31st, 1995.
Q. How did you first get involved in Track and Field? A. I competed in the interschool track and field competitions and then after the 2008 Beijing Olympics there was much excitement over Usain Bolt and this heightened my interest. I started with the Flyers Track Club as a sprinter, with Ms Donna Watson giving me my first training opportunity in a club. Q. Did you have a particular Track idol? A. I do not have a particular Track idol, although I do look up to many athletes who compete in my events such as Christian Taylor, Phillip idowu, Iva Ukhov and Jesse Williams. I also look up to the King of Track and Field, Usain Bolt; his mixture of raw talent and hard work to create great success is motivational to more than just the sprinters.
Q. When did you realize that you wanted to compete Internationally? A. As soon as I became involved in the sport
Q. What would you describe as your strongest discipline? A. High Jump Q. Which do you feel needs the most improvement? A. Triple Jump Q. What one moment in your Sport to date are you most proud of? A. Carifta 2011, Jamaica - 4th in High Jump and 5th in Long Jump Q. What are your goals for the rest of 2013? A. Consistent improvement with aspirations of medaling in the upcoming international meets. Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you? A. I train usually 6 days a week: Sunday and Wednesday – weight training at the Olympic Club with Brian Wellman; Monday and Thursday – High Jump at the Track with Rohaan Simons; Tuesday and Saturday – Triple Jump at the Track with Brian Wellman. Q. Did you compete in the 2013 CARIFT Games at the National Sports Center? A. Yes Q. If yes what do you think about it? A. I enjoyed the overall experience although the excitement of the home crowd added extra pressure while competing.
Q. What do you do when you’re not taking part in Track and Field? A. I have had to cut back on my other activities and devote the rest of my time to studying, as I am in my final year of the IB program at Warwick Academy. Q. You are the president of BNAA for one day, what drastic changes do you make? A. Initiate plans for an indoor track.
