Vincent Dufort, registered a "double-double" and scored the winning basket on a free-throw with 43 seconds remaining in overtime as TeJour Riley and his No.6-seeded McGill University Men’s Basketball teammates upset No.2-Cape Breton University 86-84 in a noon-hour matchup at the CIS Final Eight Men's Basketball before 3,094 at Scotiabank Place.
It was only McGill's second victory in CIS championship history and their first since 1977, when they defeated Laurentian 78-68 in the opening round before dropping their next two games and finishing fourth.
Dufort, a 6-for-5 shooting-guard, finished with 19 points after a slow start that had him scoring just a deuce at halftime. He also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and collected five assists.
Other McGill players in double figures included Adrian Hynes-Guery, with a team-high 20 points, Simon Bibeau scored 16 and senior Winn Clark added 14 points.
All-Canadian James Dorsey, a 6-foot-2 point-guard, was named as Cape Breton's Game MVP after leading them with a tournament-high 39 points in a losing cause, shooting 15-for-38 and making five of 22 attempted three-pointers. He went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line and forced the five-minute overtime with a pair of clutch freebies on the last play of regulation after a disputed foul was called on McGill sophomore Riley at the buzzer.
McGill, which had a 45-37 edge in rebounding, led 18-14 after the opening quarter but Cape Breton bounced back to take a 35-33 advantage into halftime. McGill outscored Cape Breton 28-20 in the third quarter to go ahead 61-55 but the Cape Breton tied the contest at 75-75 on Dorsey's last-second heroics.
Riley went 1 for 2 from the Field go his 2 points, Riley grabbed 3 Rebounds to go along with 1 Assist and 2 Steals in 25 minutes of action.
