Wells and Smith's Clubs Draw in England

Nahki Wells

Port Vale continued to suffer from the promotion jitters as Nahki Wells and his Bradford City teammates came closest to winning a hard fought 0-0 draw.

Tough-tackling midfielder Anthony Griffith, making his second Vale debut on loan Leyton Orient, was treading a tightrope from the sixth minute after he was booked for a late challenge on Stephen Darby.

And Bradford were marginally the better side in the scrappy early sparring before the home fans urged their struggling team into greater efforts.

Louis Dodds' shot was deflected narrowly wide with visiting keeper Jon McLaughlin beaten before Tom Pope headed a foot wide from the resulting corner.

Pope looked destined to break his seven-match barren spell in the 32nd minute when his six-yard header drew a superb save from the increasingly busy McLaughlin.

But Bradford came within inches of taking a 49th minute lead when Chris Neal tipped James Hanson's header against the bar from Carl McHugh's cross.

And Vale had another narrow escape on the hour when Richard Duffy cleared off the line from Rory McArdle and then Hanson in a frantic scramble.

The visitors were now the dominant force and in the 65th minute Phil Parkinson brought on the speed of Wells and Kyel Reid in an attempt to take advantage.

But Vale, with Darren Purse a tower of strength at the back, at least held out for an important point.

Jonte Smith

Crawley defender Mat Sadler hit a second-half equalizer but his side's faint play-off hopes took a dent in a 1-1 draw against Carlisle.

Jonte Smith was once again an un-used substitute, Jon-Paul McGovern gave Carlisle the lead in stunning fashion with a tremendous 40-yard free-kick midway through the first half.

Crawley goalkeeper Paul Jones flapped at the ball weakly as it went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Carlisle defender Danny Livesey should have hit the target shortly before when heading wide from a McGovern corner.

The home side finished the first half strongly and winger Nicky Adams had a fierce free-kick parried away by Mark Gillespie, before the Carlisle goalkeeper again denied Adams by turning his volley round the post.

Crawley equalized 11 minutes after the break through Sadler, who rifled home from 18 yards into the roof of the net after being set up by Mike Jones.

Jamie Proctor could have clinched it for Crawley when he wastefully headed an Adams cross over the crossbar before Carlisle substitute David Symington's 25-yard free-kick was well saved by goalkeeper Jones.
