Dage Minors and his St. Johnsbury Boys indoor Track and Field teammates were the defending State Champions.

Minors was chasing multiple crowns in the middle distance at the state championships at Norwich University.

Minors going in was the top seed in the 1,600, 1,000, 600 and 300 and was listed as one of the runners on St. Johnsbury Academy’s top-ranked 4x400-meter relay squad. By rule, Minors, who set the 1,600 state record earlier this season, could only run four events and had to scratch from at least one race.

During the Championships Minors was just flat-out good.

Minors, who was named the State’s Boys Athlete of the Year during the awards ceremony, was the meet’s star, powering to victories in the 1,600m clocking 4:34.37, 1,000m in a time of 2:43.26 and the 600m breaking the tape in 1:25.68. Minors ran the events in which on their own require a certain amount of recovery time. Minors accomplished his triple in back-to-back-to-back fashion, and then ran on St. Johnsbury’s winning 4-by-400-meter relay squad with a comeback anchor leg that produced a photo finish.

It was a stretch that even impressed his coach, Chip Langmaid.

“His workouts have been unbelievable,” said Langmaid about Minors. “He’s been phenomenal – it’s scary.”

Minors said Langmaid asked him about tripling last night. By morning, Minors was ready to conquer a challenging event workload.

“I felt pretty good when I woke up and I said as might as well go for the triple, said Minors, who also won the 1,000 for the third straight year. “We went for it and it all worked out.”
