The Bermuda Bicycle Association President Peter Dunne recently traveled to Havana, Cuba to attend the quadrennial congress of COPACI, the continental division of the UCI under which Bermuda falls.
Thirty-One countries were represented and the main purposes were to elect the executive of COPACI, select a UCI management committee representative (Mike Plant of USA) and appoint individuals to vote at the next UCI AGM.
The meeting also presented an opportunity to spend some time with colleagues from the other Caribbean federations as well as from some of the major cycling countries in the Americas which have expressed a willingness to assist with the development of the sport in our region.
Also attending was UCI president Pat McQuaid who addressed the congress on a range of issues facing our sport and his continued focus on the issues of globalization of the sport and the anti-doping program.
Dunne said, “Many thanks to all those who donated cycling kit. A fairly large duffle bag of jerseys and shorts we handed to José Peláez, president of COPACI and, until just recently, the head of Federación Cubana de Ciclismo. The gift was greatly appreciated and will be distributed to junior cyclists in their national programs.”
