Quintonio Lema, Jahquan Smith-DeShields, Mauriq Hill and Dakai Grant all played a part in the Montverde Academy (MVA) Boys Varsity Soccer Team that was victorious over #6 Coppell High School in the M.A.S.T. Semi-Final 2 - 0.
Senior defender and UNC-Greensboro commit, Lema got Montverde Academy going early with a blast from distance into the far corner after some tidy skill from Deshields up top. MVA continued to press defensively when minutes later, Saul Bonilla would get his 10th goal of the season off a rebound from 6 yards out. “We wanted to get a goal in the first 20 minutes to settle the match,” said Head Coach Mike Potempa. “They sat in on us with numbers behind the ball and tried to make things difficult looking to counter through their target play. I thought we did a good job after the first 10 minutes of eliminating that option, but we really needed to get the 3rd goal to kill the match which we failed to do.”
The second half proved to be an exciting tactical battle as the Eagles continued to press for the 3rd goal creating several quality chances, but could not find the back of the net. “I told the guys at half time that after the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half, they would start to come at us a bit more which they did, but we really needed to make better decisions in transition going forward to take advantage of the spaces that were being created,” Potempa added.
With the result, Montverde Academy now moves on to face national powerhouse Brophy Prep in the 2nd Annual M.A.S.T. championship final at 7:30pm Eastern Standard Time.
